Chapter 19

John sat on his couch, staring at the television. He’d just gotten home after being out all night, and while he should have been crawling into bed, John was wide awake, like someone had just tossed a bucket of water on him. On the TV was a reporter standing along the side of the road just fifty or so yards from where he’d dumped the dog walker’s body a few hours before.

He shook his head and dug his fingers into his eyes. If he could just delete the entire day before from his life, he would in an instant.

The reporter on the scene mentioned something about a serial killer and something about the FBI having a press conference at noon.

“The FBI,” John said.

He hadn’t seen or heard anything about the FBI being involved. The last John had heard about the bodies had been a bit on the news a few days before. The reporter had mentioned something about the pair of killings between the college kid and the guy he’d picked up outside the gas station being connected. But the current news anchor talked about the newest body possibly being the fifth, which meant that they had to have tied the pair of bums to the others. The coverage went to commercial.

John changed the channel and found more news and more reporters reporting from the scene of the body dump. The second and third channels didn’t expound on the story. They all mentioned a possibility of a fifth body. They all said serial killer. They all mentioned an FBI press conference.

“Press conference at noon.” John would be sure to tune in to see if they revealed anything.

The amount of attention John’s actions were getting troubled him to say the least. John looked out the window over his shoulder, and through the blinds’ slats, he could see his car. He needed to clean the trunk. He’d had both Bannon’s body and the dog walker’s in the trunk hours earlier. After dumping the dog walker’s body, John had gone back to his store to get Bannon. He’d figured that cops would be looking around the neighborhood, and he didn’t want Bannon’s body anywhere near a police search.

John had taken Bannon to the woods near the Big Black River. Hours of backbreaking digging had followed, and John had gotten Bannon in the earth just before sunrise. John had covered the fresh earth with leaves and branches. Not that it mattered. The location John had chosen ensured that Bannon’s body would never be found.

John caught the time—almost nine in the morning. He wanted to watch whatever the news had on at noon, which meant he could only get about three hours of sleep—if he actually fell asleep.
